the architect’s brother

Robert and Shana Parkeharrisonmake some hauntingly beautiful and erie photographs.  Robert stars in the photos as “Everyman”.  They only produce about 10 a year, because from conception to execution, they are so time consuming to make.  These images are hand crafted.  Remember the darkroom?  They build and photograph the sets and make paper negatives from collages of these photographs.  They add paint and beeswax to the finished prints.   They also make photogravures.  I love this sort of elaborately staged photography.  It combines elements of sculpture and theatre.

Until recently, I was only familiar with the Architect’s Brother Series.  It seems they are now working in color.  I don’t know much about this new color work.  They are C prints, but I am not sure if they digitally altered or not.  I was shocked to come across pieces in which Everyman was not present.  A woman appeared in a few of the images.   The sets are less elaborate in the color work, but it is an interesting departure.

Here is some of their color work.

I would love to know more about their new process and if it has changed much.

See more here and here.  Buy their book here.

sick day

I woke up with fire throat this morning. Ugh! So I am home from work resting today while Marcus and Pippy are out having fun in this beautiful weather. Double ugh!

My mom’s remedy is to drink Odwalla Superfood and pick at a roasted chicken all day. To that I add ginger tea with honey and lemon and lots of sparkling water mixed with grapefruit juice. Oh and coconut sorbet. It works wonders on the fire throat!

white

For the first time i think ever, I want to paint my walls white.  I mentioned this to a friend and her response was “Who are you?”  I don’t know.

There were about 4 or 5 different wall colors in my last apartment.  When we moved into our current apartment, we asked our landlord to not paint over the brown that the previous tennents painted the walls.  It wasn’t our first choice, but I figured it was better than white.  I was wrong.  We hated the brown walls pretty soon after we moved in, but I was pregnant, so we couldn’t do anything about it.  Then the baby came and we didn’t want her to breath the fumes and we were also in that new parent daze.  Well here it is a year and a half + later and still with the brown walls. I didn’t realize how much of our “stuff” is brown.  With the brown walls, it’s pretty drab.  Our main living area is long and narrow with windows on only on wall, so it’s pretty dark as well.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw this photo set.  This is what I want!  A crisp white back drop is just what our “stuff” needs.  I’ve always been a cozy girl.  Maybe it’s the thought of the approaching Spring, maybe it’s the shiny happy girl who now shares our space, but I am craving light airiness like never before.

meet the newest member of our family

imgp0748.jpg

Shortly after Pippy was born, we started to acquire a bit of an old press collection. This is the newest addition. We have a few other letterpresses, but this is our first Vandercook. We are super excited. We got it last weekend from a Craigslist ad. It has a sibling – another Vandercook proof press. It is in the back of our car because it is so heavy that we haven’t figured out how we’ll get it upstairs. Space is an issue, so our collection is pretty scattered. This press currently lives in our dinning area and I think it is going to stay there. That way we can actually use it. It’s so pretty too. The other one will probably go in the living room.

M is a printmaker and he’s good at figuring things out, so we’ve been tinkering. He signed up for a letterpress class at the San Francisco Center for the Book at the end of March, so he’ll be able to show me more. I can’t wait to start!

I’ll update with more press photos as we gather them together.

amelie

amelie460.jpg

I’ve got Amelie on the brain lately.  It’s one of my favorite movies, and apparently, it’s the Pip’s too.  It was on non stop for about a week.  Seriously.  She didn’t sit and stare at it the whole time, at least.  But it had to be on in the background.  It doesn’t have to be on at all times anymore, but she asks for it at least once a day.  (Yes, by name.)

I always said that I wouldn’t let my children watch too much TV or watch the same video over and over.  So much for that.  The truth is that I think it is really cute that my 20 month old loves Amelie.  I am quite pleased that we have similar tastes in movies.

On a side note – I was going to post the sweet kissing scene from the end of the movie.  The YouTube community deemed it inappropriate for those under 18, so you can’t see it without logging in.  Huh?

Anyway, I didn’t feel like creating an account, so I posted this picture instead.

two hearts bakery

A friend gave me this goody for Valentine’s day – 24K S’mores Heart from Two Hearts Bakery.  They are based here in San Francisco, but they ship all over the country.  They make really cute cookies, cupcakes and other treats, including sea salt caramels!

My favorite part of my little treat was the tiny little spot of gold leafing.  Such a cute detail.  They have a cute logo and a nice website where you can place orders.  See they’re website here.

hello spring

abbydogpark.jpg

Fall and Winter have always been my favorite time of year. I love the coziness of the colder months. Spring has stopped by for a visit for the last few days and I am enjoying having her around. I am not usually ready for her this early, but with a 20 month old, life is easier when it’s not raining and dark by 5pm. This Winter went by in a blur.

I am looking forward to longer days, picnic dinners and explorations (like the one above) in the park after work, fewer layers of clothing (this is San Francisco, so a few layers are always necessary), brisk, sunny days and lots of fresh air.

stay tuned…

I will return shortly.
