Archive for October, 2008
This weekend week took a drive down the coast a bit where there are some nice pumpkin patches and farms. We have one nice one it the city, but the ones down the coast have pony rides and petting zoos. I have never been before and now we have a new tradition. We do a lot more fun things now since becoming parents. Here Pip is discussing the meaning of life with a new friend. It was quite an intense conversation.
I can’t believe Halloween in this week!
I feel ungrateful saying this, but I am tired of the sunshine. We had a lovely, chilly and foggy fall weekend and now it’s about 80 degrees. Too hot for Bronwyn. It is beautiful, tough. The light is a special golden yellow, only seen in October. Still, I crave the cool, moody atmosphere that the fog brings. I suppose it will be here to stay soon enough. Until then I should savor this lovely October sun.

One of my favorite sculptors/instillation artists is Juan Munoz. We are lucky enough to have one of his pieces at the sculpture garden at the De Young, which is walking distance from my house. I often take Pip there to play. Unless I’m crazy, he also did a series of photos of a model city that he built and set on fire. At first glance, it looks like a real city on fire. My google search did not unearth these photos, so now I’m wondering if I am confusing him with someone else. I don’t think so, though. If you can shed some light on this, please do. Otherwise, enjoy his lovely work.
I am a compulsive list maker. I always have been. I make lists of things I need, things I want, things to do, places to go, books to read and such. But I also make more random lists as a form of entertainment. Happy words that begin with the letter T. Favorite purple foods. Thai restaurants passed on the bus ride home.
Today, I offer you snippets of conversation overheard on the bus.
- “So, how’s your Demon child?”
- “My biggest headache is the two year old.”
- “What am I gonna do? My bladder’s gonna burst!”
- “If I were going to have a piece of taxidermy in the house, that’d be it.”
- “My friend had a nervous breakdown, so I have to go get my daughter.”
The things you hear when you pay attention. What have you overheard lately?

This is the cutest perfume ad in the world!
It’s just like the end of The Red Balloon! And sometime soon (December or January I think) there will be an accompanying commercial directed by Sofia Coppola. Heart!
I am so excited that it is back! I got home late last week and had to download from iTunes. I watched it on my bus rides to work this week. Sometimes I really love technology.
It seems I’ve got a theme going this week – burnt/smokey? Well, I’ll run with it. This caramel sauce from Recchiuti is insanely good! It’s not actually burned in the sense that it is charred. It stops just short of that. Imagine caramel sauce that is slightly less sweet, super buttery, deep and smokey. Of course it is delicious on really good vanilla ice cream. For an amazing Fall treat, try it on baked apples. Oh wow! I am going to give their Brownie Sundae Kit for hostess gifts all season. Cute idea, right?
They also make a fantastic Extra Bitter Chocolate Sauce. They make a Brownie Sundae Kit featuring this sauce and they make a sauce duo box. All would make great gifts. I have the chocolate sauce in my refrigerator right now and love it, but have to say that I am partial to the caramel. It’s just so good! The Recchiuti shop is in the Ferry Building, so it is always a lovely trip to make. Don’t worry if you don’t live in San Francisco, you can order on their website. Mmmmm…
I can’t believe it is October! Does saying that every month mean that I’m getting old? I think it might. Anyway, on this first day of the month of Halloween, I thought a post about DL & Co might be suitable.
DL & Co “Modern Alchemists and Purveyors of Curious Goods” specializes in dark and romantic goods and make some of the most exquisite candles imaginable. They have a beautiful, Gothic Victorian sensibility and are made from rare and expensive materials, so they are quite pricey. But man are they lovely!
The proprietor, Douglas Little is a “fragrancer, graphic artist, instillation artist, interior designer, illustrator, sculptor” who dresses as a Victorian gentleman. He also produces stationary, chocolates, and other “objects and curiosities”.
He produced this spread in House & Garden.
He then created window displays based on the House & Garden spread for Bergdorf Goodman.
Dreamy!
