blue eggs and yellow tomatoes

I have a weakness for food that is a different color than expected. If I have a choice between regular white cauliflower and yellow cauliflower, I’ll choose the yellow. I flipped over some purple beans (like green beans except, you guessed it, they were purple) at the farmer’s market a few months ago. White asparagus, golden raspberries, blood oranges – I love them all! So naturally, I was drawn to this book while browsing on my lunch hour. It’s full of lovely, produce based recipes and beautiful photographs. The author lives in Los Angeles and in addition to a vegetable garden, has a goat and chickens in her back yard. She and her family eat the eggs from the chickens and drink the milk from the goat. She includes advice on how to do this in the book.

I would love to be able to do this someday! I don’t think my landlord would appreciate it, so I suppose I’ll just have to wait until I live in a house that I own. Someone in a the building behind mine turned the postage stamp sized back yard into a mini greens farm It looks like chard and various lettuces. They have chickens too! So, it can be done! What about you? Would you like to grow some of your own food? What about chickens or a goat – would you take it that far?

yes, this is really a post about socks.

I have been craving cozy warmth more than usual. Maybe it’s because of the cold weather we are having after 2 weeks of summer weather in January. While looking at the Toast catalog online, I came across this photo and fell for the cozy socks. I started wondering where I could find a similar pair. While I love these, 47 pounds (which I believe is about $65 US) is out of my budget for a pair of socks. After a bit of googling, I found this website. They do not have thick cable knit wool socks, but they have a huge selection of beautiful socks. My favorites are these and these.

I’m still on the hunt for thick and slouchy cable knit wool socks. If you know where I might find some, please share! Happy Monday!

french film students and 100 posts

Hi! Today is my 100th post! It took a while since I took a couple of breaks but I am excited to reach this point. Thanks for stopping by and commenting! It has been so fun!

Today I thought I’d post this animation clip. I don’t have much information other than it was made by some french film students. I think it is just beautiful and it makes me smile. Wishing you many smiles today.

Binh Danh prints photographs on leaves using the sun. He calls them chlorophyll prints. He then casts them in resin. Beautiful. I’ve seen them in person and they are amazing.

happy inauguration day!

Inauguration A Nation Gathers

This is the end of Bush Street here in San Francisco. The street sign normally reads “end Bush”. Someone covered it with “begin Obama” this morning. Pretty clever! Hope your day is lovely!

It appears that I wasn’t quite ready to come back from holiday. I hope 2009 is treating everyone well.

I’d love it if 2009 brings me this amazing home. Would you like to live in a woodland shire? You can! The plans are online. Now, where to build a shire in San Francisco… Any ideas?

new beginnings

I started the new year today. Monday is a bad day to start the new year and last week so did not count. One of my many resolutions this year is to fall in love with my apartment. It definitely needs some love. I first saw the above photo, from Skona Hem, on Bliss and instantly fell in love. I think it is fresh and clean and perfect for a new year. What were your resolutions?
